Geothermal Frequently Asked Questions |
Is geothermal heating and cooling new?No, the basic technology has been around for more than 50 years. Many individuals and businesses have been enjoying the benefits of using the earth's heat for much of that time. Recently, the installation, materials used, electronic control systems, and the efficiencies of the compressors, heat pumps and other equipment have dramatically improved. There are now more than one million installations in the US. Can a geothermal heating system work in climates with frozen soil? Absolutely! The ground loops are installed below the frost line (usually 4-8 feet in depth, depending on soil type), the changing temperatures above ground do not effect the heating capabilities. They are usually very effective in cold climates. What about comfort? A geothermal system has very steady, even heating and cooling. This is because the air is moved in a slightly higher volume than a conventional system which saturates the home with warmth and eliminates hot and cold spots. Can geothermal be used with hydronic systems? Yes, they are ideal for use with hydronic systems and are especially effective when combined with forced air systems. Add state-of-the-art controls and you have one of the most comfortable heating and cooling systems available. How much maintenance is required? Very little compared to conventional systems. If the distribution is air then filters would need to be changed. Heat pumps do not have combustion so most of the associated problems and maintenance required of boilers and furnaces is not an issue. Can a geothermal system heat water for my home? Yes. A desuperheater can be added to the unit to do that task. It is a heat exchanger that uses superheated gases from the heat pumps compressor to heat water. This can save over 50% off of your water heating bill. I have ductwork, but will it work with this system? Yes, it will. Minor adjustments might be needed, but your installer will be able to determine the ductwork requirements for you. Do geothermal heat pumps have outdoor units? No, they are located inside your home, usually in the basement, garage or crawl space, which also extends the lifetime of the equipment. Where are the ground loops located? This depends on the amount of land available and terrain. Most closed loops are trenched horizontally in yards that border the home. But any area with suitable soil conditions and sufficient amount of square footage will work. How long will the loop pipe last? Over 50 years. The loop is made of a material that is extraordinarily durable but allows heat to pass through efficiently. When the certified installers heat fuse sections of the pipes together, it makes the connections stronger than the loop itself. Loop manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty on their high-density polyethylene pipe. |
